Time Management Calculator

How much time should you be studying per week*?

Generally, you should spend 2-3 hours per credit hour, outside of seated class time, to be successful in your courses.

  • For completely online asynchronous courses, you should plan for 3-4 hours per credit hour, because the course does not have seated class time.
  • For hybrid courses, the time you spend outside of seated class time will vary based on the course schedule.

Below is an interactive tool that will help you visualize how you currently spend your time in a typical week. Use this chart to help you identify areas of opportunity to maximize your potential for success.

Instructions: Fill in the approximate time you spend each week doing the activities listed below. As you indicate how much time you spend for each activity, the chart will automatically deduct that time from your weekly allotment to indicate how much unused time you have left in the week. Once you have indicated your typical week, take some time to reflect on which areas you can adjust to achieve better life balance.

*Note: the below calculations are based on a 16-week Fall or Spring semester - your workload and time commitment will be much more condensed in a Summer term.

Please note:

  • In this chart, study time will auto-populate based on the formula of three hours of study time per credit hour.
  • Your actual study time may vary each week, depending on the nature of the course. Review your course schedule and requirements carefully to budget your time effectively.
  • Allow extra time if you feel you will need more in-depth support, such as tutoring or study groups.
